This chapter is about “discharges causing uncleanness.” This one is kind of gross. It’s also a medical one. This chapter gets into male semen & women’s monthly flow. And it gets into what to do in each instance/case. I hope y’all enjoy the read.
God tells Moses & Aaron about what’s going on with discharges. Here’s the details: When a person has a bodily discharge, the discharge is unclean. (It doesn’t say what kind of discharge.) If it (the discharge) continues to flow or stops/”blocked,” it makes him unclean. This is how his discharge will bring about uncleanness:
Any bed the person (with the discharge) lies on, unclean. Anything they sits on, unclean. Anyone who touches their bed must wash their clothes & bathe with water. (Again, like they’re gonna bathe in wine! I mean, you never know. But I highly doubt it. There’s no precedent for it.) They’ll be unclean until evening. Whoever sits on anything that the person with the discharge sat on must, again, wash their clothes & bathe with water. They’ll be unclean until evening.
Whoever touches the person (with the discharge), has to wash their clothes, bathe, & will be unclean until evening.
If the person (with the discharge) spits on someone who’s clean (Why they would do this is beyond me. And it’s really gross!), the “clean” person must wash their clothes, bathe, & be unclean until evening.
Everything the person sits on when riding (I’m assuming riding a horse, camel, donkey, etc.) will be unclean. Whoever touches any of those things will be unclean until evening. Again, having to wash their clothes, take a bath, & is unclean until evening.
Anyone the person (with the discharge) touches without rinsing their hands with water MUST wash their clothes, bathe, & is unclean until evening.
A clay pot that the person (with the discharge) touches must be broken. (I’d be pretty mad if that was my only pot. If I was poor enough to just have 1 clay pot & this idiot touches it! I’d be washing my clothes, taking a bath, & waiting until evening, because I’d be touching the hell right out of them!) Any wooden article is to be rinsed with water.
When a person is cleansed from their discharge, they are to count off 7 days (There it is again!) for their ceremonial cleansing. They have to wash their clothes & bathe themselves with fresh water. They’ll be clean. On the 8th day, they have to take 2 doves/2 young pigeons to the Tent (of Meeting), giving them to the priest. The priest is to sacrifice them. One for the sin offering, & one for the burnt offering. This is the way that the person will make atonement before God because of their discharge.
Here comes the fun part: When a man, specifically, has “an emission of semen,” he must bathe his whole body with water. He’ll be unclean until evening. (So if a guy has a good time by himself, he has to bathe & is considered “unclean” until evening. So that means no masturbation. Right?) Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water (No, he’s gonna clean up his evidence with milk!) It will, again, be unclean until evening.
This next part, y’all: When a man lies with a woman & there’s an emission of semen (It doesn’t say anything about whether or not this is his wife. Or whether or not if the semen is inside or outside of the females body. We haven’t got to the part of the bible where it says “It’s better to put your seed into the belly of a whore than to spill it upon the earth.” Yes, it’s in there!), both the man & woman has to bathe in water. They’ll be unclean until evening. (It’s pretty bad that when you have sex and you’re unclean!)
When a woman has her period, the impurity of said period will last 7 days. Anyone who touches her will be unclean until evening. Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean. Anything she sits on will be unclean too. Whoever touches her bed must wash their clothes, bathe, & be unclean until evening. Whoever touches anything she sits on must wash their clothes, bathe, & is unclean until evening.
If a man lies with her & her period touches him, he’ll be unclean for 7 days. Any bed he lies on will be unclean too.
When a woman has a discharge of blood for a lot of days at a time, other than her period or continues beyond her period (for example, when she has a baby.), she’ll be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just like as in the days of her period. When she’s cleansed from her discharge, she must count of 7 days. After this, she’ll ceremonially clean. (The cleansing is the same as for the men or listed above.)
The burnt & sin offerings are the same as above. This is the way she HAD to make atonement for herself for the uncleanness she showed before God.
God then make it an extra special statement: “You must keep the Israelites separate from things that make them unclean, so they won’t die in their uncleanness for defiling my tabernacle, which is among them.”
