The Book of Leviticus, Chapter 9

This chapter is about Aaron & his sons starting their priestly duties. This is kinda like a the ritualized 1st day of anything! Like the 1st day of the president, or a new monarch. It’s pretty short, in comparison to other chapters of the bible. I actually kind of like this one. A lot of sacrificing animals, which is their way of pomp & circumstance. It ends with the Israelite community losing its mind & having a “Hallelujah moment.” I hope y’all enjoy this read!

On the 8th day (if you read the last chapter, you’ll see that their ordination ceremony lasted 7 days), Aaron & his sons were called by Moses. Moses also called forth the elders too. Aaron was then told by Moses to take a bull calf for the sin offering & a ram for the burnt offering (both animals couldn’t have any defects, physically/mentally/etc.) & present them to God. Aaron was then to tell the Israelite community: “Y’all gotta take a male goat for a sin offering, a calf & a lamb (both of these animals are to be a year old & again without defect) for the burnt offering. Plus y’all gotta get an ox & a ram for a fellowship offering to sacrifice before God. Y’all HAVE to sacrifice this together with the grain offering mixed with oil. Cause guess what, y’all?! Today God himself will appear to you.”

They brought all the things Moses had told them to bring. They brought it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. The whole community came near & stood before God. Moses says, “This is what God has commanded you to do. So that the glory of God may appear to you.”

Moses then tells Aaron to make his offerings for his self & the people. Aaron makes his way to the altar & slaughters the calf as the sin offering for himself. (He did this, not as a selfish act, because he had to be pure in order to make others pure.) His sons helped with the whole ceremony, from the dipping of fingers in blood to burning the fat. The flesh & the hide was burned up outside the camp.

Aaron then slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons also helped with this, the sprinkling of the blood on the altar, they handed Aaron the offering piece by piece, including the head. Aaron burned those on the altar. He then proceeded to wash the inners & legs. These were burned on top of the burnt offering.

After this, Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people. He took the goat for the people’s sin offering. He slaughtered it & offered it for the sin offering, just like the first one. He brought the burnt offering & proceeded to offer it in the way Moses told him. He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it, & burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.

Aaron then slaughtered the ox & ram for the fellowship offering, for the people. Aaron’s sons helped facilitate this also. But the fat portions of the ox & ram (the fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys & the covering of the liver) they laid on the breasts & Aaron burned the fat on the altar. Aaron waved the breasts & right thigh before God as the wave offering.

Aaron lifted his hands toward the Israelites & proceeded to bless them. Having sacrificed the sin, burnt, & fellowship offerings, Aaron stepped down. Moses & Aaron then went into the Tent. When they came out, they both blessed the Israelite community. Fire came out from the presence of God & consumed the burnt offering & fat portions of the altar. When all the people saw it, they lost their minds! They shouted for joy, fell down, lost their junk.
