This chapter is about God promising deliverance to the Israelites. From here on, the Jewish people are called either Hebrews or Israelites. This chapter also is about Moses & Aaron’s genealogy. So as always I’ll do my best to tell you who’s who & how they’re related! I hope y’all enjoy!
God told Moses that because of him (God) that Pharaoh will let them go. (Who knew that God could be conceited. That seems a little conceited to me. Just a bit.) God then tells Moses that he’s the Lord & that he appeared to Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob as God Almighty (or El-Shaddai) but that by his name he didn’t make himself known to them. God also tells Moses that he’s heard the Israelites “complaining” (my words, not the bible’s) & remembered the covenant that he made. (I still think that God forgot, that he needed to remember.)
God then tells Moses that he’ll bring the Israelites out of Egypt. And that he’ll free them of their slavery. Plus that God will take the Israelites will be his own people. Moses is then told by God that then you’ll know that he’s “the Lord your God,” & that he was going to take the Israelites were going back to the land that he promised Moses’ forefathers.
Moses told all of this to the Israelites. But they didn’t listen to him because they were discouraged & their cruel bondage. Then God told Moses to go to the Pharaoh & tell him to let the Israelites go. Moses told God that if the Israelites wouldn’t listen to him, then why would the Pharaoh since he (Moses) couldn’t talk well. After this, God spoke to Moses & Aaron. God commanded them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.
These were the names of the sons of Levi (Jacob’s son), according to their records: Gershon, Kohath, & Merari (these would be Jacob’s grandsons, Isaac’s great-grandson, & Abraham’s great-great-grandson). The son of Kohath was Amram (Levi’s grandson, Jacob’s great-grandson, Isaac’s 2x-great-grandson, & Abraham’s 3x-great-grandson). Amram married his aunt (his dad’s sister) named Jochebed. Jochebed is Moses & Aaron’s mom. (So Moses & Aaron are Levi’s great-grandson, Jacob’s 2x-great-grandson, Isaac’s 3x-great-grandson, & Abraham’s 4x-great-grandson. And think about the fact they were born of an incestuous relationship.) *It’s true. Please no hate comments or mail. Check out Exodus 6:20.* Aaron married Elisheba (whose the daughter of Amminadab & sister of Nahshon) & she had Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, & Ithamar. Aaron’s son, Eleazar, married one the daughters of Putiel, she bore him Phinehas. (There are more in the genealogy. However, I cut it out because I’ve already talked about them & they had no bearing on this particular part of the “story.”)
