This chapter is about Moses being born & fleeing to Midian. This chapter gets into how Moses got into Pharaoh’s household (technically becoming an Egyptian prince. Moses was “adopted” by Pharaoh’s daughter.) This chapter also tells about Moses getting married to a Midianite priest’s daughter. And Moses killing someone. Enjoy the read, friends.
A Levite man & woman got married. She became pregnant & had a son. She saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for 3 months. Eventually she couldn’t hide him any longer. (This was still the time when Pharaoh was trying to kill all the Israelite/Hebrew kids.) She got a papyrus basket for him & coated it with tar & pitch. The woman put the baby in the basket & put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. The baby’s sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to her brother.
Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe. Her attendants were walking along the river bank.. Pharaoh’s daughter saw the basket & sent her slave girl to get it. She opened it & saw the baby. He (the baby) was crying & she (Pharaoh’s daughter) felt sorry for the baby. She said that this was one of the Hebrew kids.
The baby’s sister came & asked Pharaoh’s daughter if she wanted to get a Hebrew woman to come & nurse the baby for her. Pharaoh’s daughter says yes. The baby’s sister went & got the mom. Pharaoh’s daughter told the mom to nurse the baby & she would pay her. So the mom took the baby & nursed him.
When the child had grown older (weaned), the mom (who’s Moses’ mom) took him to Pharaoh’s daughter. He became her son, she named him Moses (which means to draw out) because she drew him out of the water/Nile. (So that’s why I said in my intro to this chapter that Moses was technically an Egyptian prince. In line for becoming pharaoh. Technically.)
(Now this next part kinda gets me a bit. Moses knows that he’s a Hebrew. Does the Pharaoh’s daughter (his “mom”) tell him? Is it one of those open secret? Is it a secret at all? How did he find out? And did he continue to know his actual biological family?)
One day, after Moses was grown, he went out where his own people were & watched them at their hard labor. Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. Looking around & seeing no one, Moses killed the Egyptian & buried (the bible says “hid”) him in sand. (My thing is: wouldn’t the Hebrew who was getting beaten see him doing this?) The next day he went out & saw 2 Hebrews fighting. He started talking to the 2 Hebrews, asking them why they were fighting. One of the Hebrews said: “Who made you king & judge over us?! Are you gonna kill me like you did the Egyptian?!” Moses got scared! He thought that what he did had become known.
When Pharaoh heard of this (which technically would Moses’ grandpa), he tried to kill Moses (which seems a bit much. You’d think that members of the royal family could do whatever they want.). But Moses ran away from Pharaoh & went to live in Midian. Moses sat down at a well.
Now a priest of Midian (I’m assuming that the priest of Midian was an Egyptian priest. The bible (Christian & Jewish) are very specific about saying a priest of God or not. But they leave this vague.) had 7 daughters. They came to draw water & fill troughs to water their dad’s flock. (Apparently THIS priest wasn’t very rich because only one flock & not plural, flocks with an “s.”) Some shepherds came along & drove them away. Moses got up from the well, coming to their rescue. He also watered their flock.
When the girls returned to Reuel, their dad (the priest of Midian), he asked them why they returned so early that day. The girls answered him by saying that an Egyptian saved them from the shepherds & that he drew water for the flock for them. Reuel, their dad, asks where he went off to & to invite him to have something to eat.
Moses agreed to stay with Reuel. Reuel gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses to be his wife. Zipporah gave birth to a son, Moses called this son Gershom (meaning: an alien there.). Moses said he named him that because he became an alien in a foreign place.
During the period that Moses met Reuel (the priest of Midian), the king of Egypt/the Pharaoh died. The Israelites were struggling in their slavery & cried out to God. Their cries for help, due to slavery, went up to God. God heard their cries & remembered his deal-making with Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob. (Yes, God had to remember! Like He forgot or something. He’s was like “Oh, by the way…I just remembered about this deal I made with this group of people over here. Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. I was distracted by messing with the Greeks over here!”) So God looked down at the Israelites & got worried about them. (Again, if God is all-knowing, all-seeing, then why would he all of a sudden get worried about this group of people?)
