This chapter is about Pharaoh’s cupbearer & baker. Joseph interprets their dreams. And he’s very accurate. It’s pretty good. I hope you enjoy the read.
Some time later, while Joseph is still in prison, the cupbearer & the baker of Pharaoh (called interchangeably with king of Egypt) offended the Pharaoh. Pharaoh was angry with them & put them in custody in the house of the Potiphar, into the same prison where Joseph was incarcerated. Potiphar assigned them (cupbearer & baker) to Joseph, & he attended them. (Remember, Joseph’s still a slave!)
After they had been in custody for some time, each of the 2 men (cupbearer & baker) had a dream on the same night. Each dream had their own meaning. When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw them being dejected. So he asked them what was wrong. They told Joseph that they both had dreams but there’s no one to interpret the dreams. Joseph told them that God gives the interpretation of dreams & to tell him their dreams.
So the cupbearer told Joseph his dream: “I saw a vine in front of me. On the vine were 3 branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed. Its clusters ripened into grapes. Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand. I took the grapes & squeezed them into the cup of Pharaoh. I put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.” Joseph tells the cupbearer the interpretation: “The 3 branches are 3 days. Within 3 days, Pharaoh will release you from prison & you’ll have your job back. When this happens, just don’t forget about me. Put a word in for me to Pharaoh, will ya? Because I don’t deserve to be in here!”
When the baker saw that Joseph had given a good interpretation, he asked Joseph to interpret his dream. The baker’s dream: On his head were 3 baskets of bread. In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh. But birds were eating them out of the basket. Joseph told the baker the meaning: “The 3 baskets are 3 days. Within 3 days, Pharaoh will lift up your head & hang you on a tree. The birds will eat your flesh.”
Now on the 3rd day, it was Pharaoh’s birthday. He gave a feast for all his officials. Pharaoh gave the cupbearer his job back. But he hung the baker, just as Joseph had said would happen. The cupbearer didn’t remember Joseph, he forgot about him.
