The Book of Genesis, Chapter 27

This chapter is about Jacob gets blessed by Isaac. Much to Esau’s ire. Esau gets seriously angry at Jacob, like a Cain & Abel-type deal. We’ll also get into Jacob being so scared of Esau that he runs away to Uncle Laban’s. All due to Rebekah’s meddling. Enjoy!

By now, Isaac was old & he was blind. He called for Esau. Isaac asked Esau to go get him some wild game & to make him some food. So that Esau could get blessed by Isaac. Rebekah was listening in on their conversion. When Esau left to go hunting, Rebekah (his own MOM!) went to Jacob & told him to make some food. Then she told Jacob to give the food to Isaac so that Jacob could get the blessing instead of Esau. (Blessings & inheritances are/were 2 totally different this time period. You could get the blessings & you’re gonna get like an awesome fortune (think mystical…esoteric.). Enjoying covenants, stuff like that. If you get the inheritance, then you just get all the stuff. Couches, money, etc.)

Jacob told Rebekah that Esau’s hairy & he’s not. Asking Rebekah what if Isaac touches him. Jacob also tells Rebekah that he would be appearing to trick Isaac & Isaac would bring a curse on him rather than a blessing. Rebekah told Jacob not to worry about it & do what she said. So Jacob did it.

Then Rebekah took Esau best clothes, which she had lying around. She put Esau’s clothes on Jacob. She also covered his hands & the smooth part of his neck with goatskins. Then she handed Jacob the tasty food & the bread she had made.

Jacob went to Isaac. Jacob told Isaac that he was Esau & that he’d done what Isaac asked. Isaac was like, “That was awful fast, son.” Jacob was all like, “Oh, God hooked me up.” Isaac told Jacob to come over to him so that Isaac out touch him. Because Isaac couldn’t see him. He wanted to make sure he was getting the right son (Esau=hairy, Jacob=smooth operator). Jacob got close enough for Isaac touch him. Isaac was a little confused, because to him it sounded like Jacob but felt like Esau.

Isaac asks Jacob, “Are you really my son Esau?” Jacob is like ‘Yep. Of course I am.” Isaac told Jacob to bring the food & he’ll get the blessing. Jacob brought Isaac the food & brought him some wine. Isaac told Jacob to come to him & kiss him. So Jacob went to him & Isaac caught a whiff of Esau’s clothes on Jacob. Isaac was convinced, finally. So Isaac blessed Jacob.

After Issac finished blessing him & Jacob’s seat wasn’t even cold yet, Esau came in from hunting. He prepared the game & brought it to Isaac. Esau starts talking to Isaac. Isaac started trembling violently. He told Esau that Jacob got the blessing. Esau gets VERY angry. Saying that Jacob had deceived him twice. (Once with his birthright & this instance.) Esau asks if there’s any blessing for him. Isaac tells Esau that he was out of luck. Esau gets desperate. “Do you have only one blessing, father? Bless me too!” Then Esau wept aloud.

Esau held a grudge against Jacob. He said to himself, ‘Dad isn’t going to live forever. I’ll kill Jacob after Isaac is gone.’ When Rebekah found out about what he was thinking about doing, she told Jacob about this. She then told Jacob to go to Uncle Laban’s house. And that when Esau had chilled out a little bit, she would let him know. So Jacob could come back home.

Then Rebekah says to Isaac that she’s “disgusted” living because of the Hittite women. And she also says that if Jacob takes a Hittite wife, that her life won’t be worth living. (I wonder if this had something to do with Esau’s Hittite wives.)
