This chapter is about Abraham being tested & Nahor’s sons (Nahor is Abraham’s brother. He’ll show up again in chapter 24.) I hope you enjoy the read.
Some time after Abimelech & Abraham made their treaty, God spoke to Abraham. “Take your son, Isaac, your only son (these 3 words always got me. Because Isaac isn’t his only son. Ugh! He’s not even the only son that has the promise of many nations, Ishmael shares in that too! Plus Abraham also has other children with another woman in chapter 23, after the death of Sarah. Yeah, I could see that. Because Sarah was just a TAD crappy at Hagar & Ishmael.), whom you love, & go to Moriah. Sacrifice Isaac there as a burnt offering on a mountain I’ll show you.”
Early the next morning, Abraham got up & saddled a donkey. He took with 2 of his servants & Isaac. When they had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, they set out for the place that God told Abraham about. On the 3rd day (yes, it was a 3 day adventure, kinda like Gillian’s Island.), Abraham saw the place in the distance. Abraham said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while Isaac & I go over there. We’ll worship & then we’ll be back.” (Knowing what’s to come (Isaac almost being sacrificed to God, THE God. I have issues with that but this is my own personal “struggle,” for the lack of a better word.), I think the word “we” is very intuitive.)
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering & placed it on his son, Isaac. Abraham carried the wood & the knife. As they (Abraham & Isaac) went on together, Isaac says “Umm, dad. The wood & fire are here. Where’s the lamb for the offering?” Abraham says, “Don’t worry son. God will provide.”
When they finally reach the spot, Abraham built the altar (kudos to him for doing that. It doesn’t say that Abraham & Isaac built the altar. At this point, Abraham is at least 100 years old. It doesn’t say how old Isaac is at this stage of the game.). He arranged the wood on the altar. Then he ties up Isaac & lays him on the altar, on top of the wood. (I think at this point, I’d be freaking out! I’d be saying “Um, dad, whatcha doing crazy town?”) Abraham reached out, took the knife to KILL Isaac. But an angel of God (traditionally thought to be Gabriel, the arehangel. But there’s no actual name.) called out to Abraham, telling him to stop. Not to do anything to Isaac.
Then Abraham looked up & saw a ram stuck in thicket, by its horns. He went & got the ram. He sacrificed it as an offering to God. So Abraham called that place “The Lord Will Provide.” The angel of God called to Abraham a second time saying, “God declares I will surely bless you & make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky & as the sand on the seashore.” This is line is also in Hebrews 6:14.
Then they returned to the servants, & they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba. Now this seems interesting to me. That it says only Abraham stayed, that means Isaac went somewhere else. Where did he go? Did he take anything with him? What did Sarah do?
Some time later, Abraham was told that his sister-in-law (Milcah) & his brother (Nahor) also had children. Their names are: Uz (the firstborn), Buz, Kemuel (the father of Aram), Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, & Bethuel. Bethuel became the dad of Rebekah (who becomes Isaac’s wife.). Nahor’s concubine named Reumah had 4 sons with Nahor too. Their names are: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, & Maacah. Yes, that’s right. You read that right.
