This chapter is about 3 visitors visiting Abraham & Abraham pleading for Sodom. In this chapter, Sarah is laughing this time. Abraham talks to God about Sodom & finding righteous people in Sodom. This is a good read. I hope you enjoy.
God appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre. Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent, in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up & saw 3 men standing nearby. When Abraham saw them, he hurried to meet them. Abraham bowed low to the ground. (These 3 men are traditionally thought to be angels. If you subscribe to the ancient alien theory (think ‘Ancient Aliens’ on the History Channel), these 3 individuals are aliens. Yes, like extraterrestrials, from another planet/star.)
Abraham says, “If I’ve found favor in your eyes, don’t pass your servant by. Let some water be brought, so you can wash your feet & rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed. Then you go on your way. (Now this has always stuck me as weird. Abraham is being hospitable but it’s like “Once you’ve caught you’ve your breath. You gotta go!”) The 3 men agree.
Abraham went quickly into his tent to Sarah. He told Sarah to get the “good flour” & make some bread. Then he ran to his herd & selected a choice & tender calf (veal, pretty much.) & gave the calf to a servant, who ran to prepare it. Then he brought some curds, milk, & the calf. He set these before the 3 men. While they ate, Abraham stood near them under a tree.
“Where’s your wife, Sarah?,” the 3 men asked. (I’m assuming that these men didn’t actually know Sarah or Abraham. Let alone if they were married. This is part of why people think that these men are not of this world.) Abraham says that she’s in the tent. Then God says, “I’ll be back about this next year & Sarah, your wife, will have a son.” (This line is in Romans 9:9) Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent, which was behind Abraham. (So Abraham probably didn’t see her.) Sarah laughed to herself & thought to herself, ‘I’m worn out & my husband is old, will I NOW have this pleasure?’ God said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh & think, ‘Will I really have a child, now yah I’m old?’ Is anything too hard for God? I’ll return at the appointed time next year & Sarah WILL have a son.” Sarah got scared because she got busted. So she lied & said, “I didn’t laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did.”
When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom. Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. God then said to himself, ‘Shall I tell Abraham what I’m gonna do?’ Then God spoke aloud, “The outcry against Sodom & Gomorrah is so great & their sin so grievous that I’ll go down to see what they’ve done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I’ll know.”
The men turned away from God & Abraham, then they went toward Sodom. But God & Abraham were left there together. Abraham asked God, “Will you sweep away the good with the bad? What if there’s 50 righteous people in the city? Far be it from you to do such a thing-to kill the good with the bad. Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” God said, “If I find 50 righteous people in Sodom, I’ll spare it for their sake.” Abraham keeps going, 45 righteous people, 40, 30, 20, 10 righteous people. God says that for the sakes of these numbers he wouldn’t destroy it. (That’s brazen of Abraham to kinda fight or debate God.) When God & Abraham were done talking, God left. Abraham returned home.
