This is perhaps one of my favorite chapters of the whole Christian/Jewish bible. It’s not often that you get see the actual birth of a different religion. It’s about Hagar & Ishmael. Ishmael is the “father” of Islam. Well, Abram/Abraham is the actual father but where Abram/Abraham’s sons with Sarah are the Jewish line, Ishmael is the Muslim line. Because Ishmael is Abram/Abraham’s son, he’s still under the covenant God made with Abram/Abraham. God made a great nation out of Ishmael, the Islamic nation. *This is not a personal/political/religious stance of any kind. I’m stating a fact, Thank you.* I hope you enjoy the read.
Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, didn’t/couldn’t have any kids with Abram. Sarai had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar. Sarai says to Abram, “God keeps me from having kids. Go sleep with Hagar. Maybe I can have kids through her.” She wanted to do like, I would guess, an open adoption. Because if they would treat Hagar’s child like their own child, that wouldn’t stop Hagar from being a servant.
Abram agreed. After 10 years of living in Canaan, “Sarai, his wife, took Hagar & gave her to Abram “to be his wife.” That’s right, it says wife. Abram sleeps with Hagar, she gets pregnant. When she knew for sure she was pregnant, Hagar began to despise Sarai. Sarai runs to Abram, “This is your fault! I put her in your arms & now that she’s prego, she hates me!” Abram says, “Do whatever you think is best.” (That’s a married man answer, if I’ve ever heard one.) Sarai mistreated Hagar, so Hagar ran up out of there.
An angel of God (it’s thought to Gabriel.) found Hagar near a spring in the desert. The angel says, “Where did you come from? Where are you going?” Hagar tells the angel. The angel tells her, “Go home. Submit to Sarai. I’ll so increase your descendants. You’re pregnant. You’re gonna have a son. You’re gonna call him Ishmael (means God hears in Hebrew). For God has heard of your misery. He’ll be a wild donkey of a man. His hand will be against everyone & everyone’s hand will be against him. He’ll live in hostility towards all his brothers.” (Which I think is pretty accurate. Relations between the 3 major world religions have always been uneasy at best.)
She gave this name to the God who spoke to her (like she could literally hear & speak with God) : You’re the God who sees me, for she said, ‘I’ve now seen the One who sees me.’ This is why the well was named Beer Lahai Roi (which means well of the Living One who sees me.).
So Hagar had Ishmael & gave Abram a son. Technically Ismael should’ve had the birthright. He is the 1st born. Abram was 86 years old when Hagar had Ismael.
