This chapter is still about the flood. This particular chapter is when the floodwaters start to begin. I hope you enjoy the read.
God tells to get his 3 sons Shem, Ham, & Japheth plus their wives to get into the ark. It doesn’t say that Noah had other children. Or if his sons had more than 1 wife.
Verse 2 a lot of people seem to overlook. It says, “Take with you 7 of every kind of clean animal, a male & its mate, & 2 of every kind of unclean animal, a male & its mate, & also 7 of every kind of bird, male & female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.” First of all, how did they know what the clean & unclean animals were? They don’t really get into that until the book of Exodus. Second of all, this verse saves us from our 2 of every kind incest deal. Because there’s more of a gene pool to go around. And notice that it seems like the sea-life is ok. But duh, they live in the water. A little flooding to them is cool! It expands their habitat, so they’re probably pretty cool about it. God then tells Noah that in 7 days (sounds a little like the movie ‘The Ring.’) the flood is coming & the duration of the flood.
Noah was 600 years old when the flood started. All of a sudden, the pairs of animals came to Noah & entered the ark. Now here’s where it gets interesting. There are some circles that believe that the dimensions of the ark couldn’t possible handle all of those animals. And it makes sense, if you think about it. All of those animals plus you can’t tell me that all of sudden these animals stop mating for 40 days & nights or some of those animals weren’t pregnant already when they entered the ark. If you’re a fan of the History Channel’s show Ancient Aliens (which I’m a HUGH fan of, by the way! If I could get Georgio (the wild haired guy from Ancient Aliens) do 1 blog post on here, I’d fangirl so hard!!! It’s not even real.), they even “theorize” that the ark was a DNA depository. Like the seed bank in Norway or Sweden. Which is another idea as to how all the animals fit into the ark.
Then the flood came. The flood started on the 17th day of the 2nd month. I’m assuming that this is the Jewish calendar. “On that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, & the floodgates of the heavens were opened.” (Verse 11, NIV) The rain fell for 40 days & nights, nonstop. 24/7. On the day that the rain started, Noah, his 3 sons (Sehm, Ham, & Japheth), Noah’s wife (singular), & Noah’s daughter-in-laws (plural) went into the ark. After all the animals & Noah’s family were in the ark, God shut the door. It’s said that it was the hand of God that shut the door & kept it closed (& watertight) during the flood.
Verse 19 says, “…& all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose & covered the mountains to a depth of more than 20 feet.” So the floodwaters went 20 feet over the tops of mountains. Mount Ararat (which is where the ark came to rest is located in the modern day country of Turkey) is 16,854 feet tall.. So that means that the depth of the water was 16,874 feet.
Everything that wasn’t in the ark was completely destroyed. Birds, livestock, wild animals, all the insects, & people. Everything. The only thing that was left alive was Noah, his family, & all the animals.
