This 3rd & final part of the Gospel of Mary. After this, I’ll be getting into the dissection. This part is about Levi defends Mary against Peter & Andrew. Andrew puts the smack down on Peter. He makes the comment, “If Jesus found her worthy, then who are you, bro?” (Basically!) It’s really great. Enjoy the read!!!
Levi Speaks on Behalf of Mary
Then Mary wept & said to Peter, “My brother Peter, what do you think? Do you think that I made this up by myself or that I’m lying about the savior?” Levi answered & said to Peter, “Peter, you are always angry. Now I see you arguing against this woman like an adversary. If the savior made her worthy, who are you to reject her? Surely the savior knows her well. (This line also makes people believe that Jesus & Mary Magdalene were married or at least had a more intimate relationship than he had with the male disciples/apostles.) That’s why he has love her more than us. So, we should be ashamed & put on perfect humanity & acquire it, as commanded us, & preach the good news, not making any rule or law other than what the savior indicated. When Levi said this, they began to leave in order to teach & preach.
Levi was a disciple of Jesus. Named Levi, son of Alphaeus in the gospel of Mark & said to be a tax collector from Capernaum. Sometimes Levi is identified with the disciple Matthew (Matthew 9:9, 10:3), but the identification is uncertain. In the Dialogue of the Savior, Matthew is one of the 3 main disciples with whom Jesus is in dialogue. In the Papyrus Rylands 463, only Levi is said to leave in order to preach.
