Peter Complains About Mary’s Prominence
(36) When Jesus finished Saint these things to his disciples, he asked, “Do you understand how I’m speaking with you?” Peter stepped forward & said to Jesus, “My master, we cannot endure this woman who gets in our way & doesn’t let any of us speak, though she speaks all the time.” Jesus answered & said to his disciples, “Let anyone in whom the power of the spirit has arisen, so that the person understands the interpretation of the mystery of repentance that Pistis Sophia mentioned. So now, Peter, discuss among your brothers the thought of her repentance.”
On the hostility of Peter toward Mary Magdalene, see the Gospel of Mary 17-18; the Gospel of Thomas 114; Pistis Sophia 72, 146. In Pistis Sophia 146 Peter says, “My master, make the women stop asking questions, so we also may raise some questions,” & Jesus responds to Mary & the women, “Give the men, your brothers, a chance to ask some questions.” Pistis Sophia, a form of Sophia, repents of her mistake, which brought about a loss of light in the world of divine fullness above & brought into being her son the demiurge & this world of matter & mortality below. Eventually she’s saved & restored, & with her the light & Pistis Sophia 87 proclaims that finally the whole human race will be brought into the kingdom of light
Mary Fears Peter But Is Vindicated
(72) When the first mystery finished saying these things to the disciples, Mary come forward & said, “My master, I understand in my mind that I can come forward at any time to interpret what Pistis Sophia has said, but I’m afraid of Peter, because he threatens me & hates our gender.” (Historically, Peter is down on women. He’s the one who says that women should be silent in church & ask their menfolk later.) When she said this, the first mystery replied to her, “Any of those filled with the spirit of light will come forward to interpret what I say: no one will be able to oppose them.”
Mary Magdalene is a Pure Spiritual Woman
(87) When Jesus finished saying these things, Mary Magdalene stepped forward & said, “My master, my enlightened person has ears, & I accept all the words you speak. Now, my master, this is what you said: “All should of the human race who will receive the mysteries of the light will be first in the inheritance of the light, before all the rulers who have repented, before the entire place one the right, before the entire place of the treasury of light.’ Concerning this saying, my master, you once said to us, ‘The first will be last & the last will be first.’ That’s to say, the last is the whole human race that will be first within the kingdom of light, before the inhabitants of the places on high, which are first. For this reason, my master, you’ve said to us, ‘Whoever has ears to hear should hear.’ In other words, you wanted to know whether we’ve grasped all the sayings you spoke. My master, this is the word.” When Mary finished saying these things, the savior marveled greatly at the answers she gave, for she had become entirely pure spirit. Jesus answered & said to her, “Well done, Mary, pure spiritual woman. This is the interpretation of the word.”
In Coptic, “my person of light.” See the Gospel of Thomas 4; Matthew 20:16; Luke 13:30; Matthew 19:30; Mark 10:31; Barnabas 6:13. In Coptic, tepneumatikeehilikrines literally “pure spiritual one,” the female form.
