In this 6th part of the Gospel of Judas, I’ll be talking an individual/entity called Adamas & entities called the luminaries. I talked about the luminaries briefly in part 5 of this series. This is only topic of discussion in this part.
The text states that Adamas was in the first luminous cloud that no angel has ever seen among all those called ‘God.’ He made the incorruptible generation of Seth appear, the 12, the 24. He made 72 luminaries appear in the incorruptible generation, in accordance with the will of the Spirit. The 72 luminaries themselves made 360 luminaries appear in the incorruptible generation, in accordance with the will of the Spirit, that their number should be 5 for each. Adamas is Adam, the first person of Genesis. In this passage (as in many other gnostic texts), Adam is to be the paradigmatic (meaning the nature of the paradigm or the model) human of the divine realm & the exalted image of humanity. The first luminous cloud is the initial manifestation of the divine. Seth, son of Adam, is also in the divine realm (check out Genesis 4:25-5:8. The role of Seth as the progenitor (an ancestor, parent, or starter) of the generation of Seth (“that generation”) is well established in most of gnostic & forbidden texts. According to this passage, everything happens in accordance with the will of the divine, the Spirit.
Then the text reads: The 12 aeons of the 12 luminaries constitute their father, with 6 heavens for each aeon, so that there are 72 heavens for 72 luminaries. Foe each of them 360 firmaments. They were given authority & a great host of angels, without number, for glory & adoration. After that also virgin spirits, for glory & adoration of all the aeons & the heavens & their firmaments. I find it curious that the heavens have a firmament. Firmament is ground, land. Like in Genesis 1. In texts considered Sethian texts, like this, ‘virgin’ is used for a variety of manifestations & powers to convey purity, of being clean. For example, in the ‘forbidden’ book called the Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit, the Great Spirit, Barbelo, Youel, & Plesithea are described as virgins. Plus the addition mention of other virgins. Eugnostics the Blessed includes a passage on the aeons that also includes virgin spirits. These aeons & luminaries, the spiritual powers of the universe represent aspects of the world, especially time & units of time. The 12 aeons have been compared to the 12 months of the year or the 12 signs of the zodiac. The 72 heavens & luminaries are comparable to the number of nations in the world, according to Jewish lore. The 360 firmaments are comparable to the number of days in a solar year (30 days per month for 12 months), without 5 intercalary days (used in the calendar to harmonize it with the solar year, like February 29th).
